Salary Negotiation Scripts That Work

Word-for-word salary negotiation scripts for the offer call, counter-offer, and final close — for every experience level.

Most candidates accept the first offer. The ones who negotiate gain $5K–$25K more on average without losing the offer. The trick is the script.

Script 1 — The offer call

“Thank you so much, I'm really excited about this opportunity. Can I take 24 hours to review the full offer in writing before responding?” Always take the time. Negotiating in the moment is the worst version of yourself.

Script 2 — The counter

“I'm thrilled about the team and the role. Based on my research and the scope we discussed, I was hoping for something closer to $X. Is there flexibility on the base?” Anchor 8-15% above the offer if your research supports it.

Script 3 — When base won't move

“I understand. Are there other levers we can look at — signing bonus, equity refresh, additional PTO, or an early performance review at 6 months?” Total compensation is more than base.

Script 4 — The close

“This works for me. I'd love to receive the updated offer in writing today and I'm ready to sign.” Close with certainty so the offer doesn't drift.

Frequently asked

What if they ask for my current salary?
Many states ban this question. The safe pivot: “I'd prefer to focus on the value I'd bring to this role. Based on the scope we've discussed, I'm targeting a range of $X–$Y.”
Will I lose the offer if I counter?
Almost never. Offers are rescinded for ghosting or bad behavior — not for a polite, well-researched counter.
